2010 - G2: US - "Soft power", "China - Crouching, Hidden Power"
1. Joseph S. Nye, Jr.pioneered the theory of soft power. His notion of "smart power" became popular with the use of this phrase by members of the new Obama Administration in 2009. Nye is currently University Distinguished Service Professor at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. The 2008 TRIP survey of 1700 international relations scholars ranked him as the sixth most influential scholar of the past twenty years, and the most influential on American foreign policy.Soft power is the ability to obtain what one wants through co-option and attraction. It is in contradistinction to 'hard power', which is the use of coercion and payment. The idea of attraction as a form of power did not originate with Joseph S.Nye and can be dated back to such ancient Chinese philosophers as Laozi in the 7th century BC.
China emerging as a number 2 power in the world. And uncertain what the world could expect from China in the next decades. Remember the famous movie! The title Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon draws upon an ancient Chinese saying, a proverb used to characterize situations and places wherein there dwell hidden heroes and legends - and where nothing is as it seems. China is powerful, making remarkable progress, but it is not enough to challenge the USA.
